Alto Adige wines with Mark Cerimele from RARM
Tenuta Hans Rottensteiner is located in Bolzano, the capital city of Alto Adige, Italy. The Rottensteiner Family has been making wine since the year 1530. Traditionally in this part of the world, the family winery is passed down to the first born son. Hans Rottensteiner was the 2nd born son, so he started his own winery in the 1900s. The area where their vineyards are situated is well-known for their unique soil type called porphyry which is a red volcanic rock. Rottensteiner believes in making wine in a traditional style and focuses on higher elevations for their vineyards than many other producers in the area. Their wines are clean and elegant with lifted acidity in all of their wines due to the elevations and strong diurnal temperature shifts in the area.
Wine #1 - Muller Thurgau 2020 $21.99
Grown at nearly 3,000 feet of elevation outside of the town of Bolzano. Made with 100% Muller-Thurgau grapes and fermented/aged in stainless steel. This wine shows beautiful acidity, tart citrus, and a long finish. It is such a unique wine that is rarely found outside of Alto Adige, Italy and Germany.
Wine #2 - Pinot Grigio 2020 $21.99
Alto Adige is widely considered to be the most prestigious region in the world for Pinot Grigio production. Unlike so much of the Pinot Grigio in the market, this wine has character and complexity. It is grown at nearly 2,000 feet of elevation, as compared to the 200-400ft you generally see in bulk production Pinot Grigio from other parts of Italy. Rottensteiner also keeps their yields very low compared to most other producers outside of Alto Adige, roughly 70% lower yields in fact. This particular wine is aged only in stainless and shows incredible minerality on the palate with a beautiful saline finish typical of their wines made from grapes grown in porphyry soil.
Wine #3 - Gewurztraminer 2020 $25.99
Alto Adige is also considered to be making the world's best Gewurztraminer. Gewurztraminer from Alto Adige is very different than those of Alsace, France, in that the examples from Alto Adige are dry in style, as opposed to those in Alsace. This particular Gewurztraminer is as dry as the grape can possibly be made. It is truly one of the best examples of Gewurztraminer on the market.
Wine #4 - Schiava -Lago di Caldaro DOC - 2020 $31.99
This bright red wine made from 100% Schiava grapes is full of fresh, aromatic, red fruit. Despite being at the northern tip of Italy, summer days are very warm, but the cool nights allow the wines to develop beautiful acidity. This wine is aged only in stainless steel to maintain the freshness of fruit and lifted aromatics. This is the perfect light body summer red wine.
Wine #5 - Lagrein Riserva single vineyard Gries 2018 $54.99
This is truly one of the most unique wines in the world. Lagrein is a rare & ancient grape varietal only found in this part of the world & rarely exported outside of Italy. This particular wine is made in the prestigious single vineyard of "Gries", the top vineyard in the world for growing Lagrein. The Lagrein made by Rottensteiner is bold, dark, and tannic but despite its power, the wine is driven by crisp red fruit and has relatively low alcohol (13.5%). It is aged between 2 and 3 years prior to release, depending on vintage. Although ready to drink right now, this wine can age for decades in the cellar.
